OAA Advocacy

The Ohio Aviation Association (OAA) advances aviation and airports across Ohio. As the voice for Ohio airports, the OAA works to develop policies and affect legislation through education and advocacy in the executive and legislative branches on behalf of our members.

Over the last year OAA successfully worked with legislators and the DeWine Administration to:

  • Change the law to help remove derelict or abandoned aircraft from airports
  • Increase dedicated airport infrastructure funding from $10 million to just under $20 million annually, including funds for hangers and fuel farms
  • Provide one-time funding for 11 commercial service and general aviation airport infrastructure projects
  • Reintroduce the Airspace Protection Act so that Ohio law is consistent with federal aviation law, allowing airports to better control their airspace (work on passing in 2026)

Thank you to all legislators and the DeWine Administration for supporting these efforts!

In addition to these successes, OAA also:

  • Held a successful annual conference with over 250 attendees
  • Conducted regional airport events in conjunction with the OAA board meetings in JobsOhio network partner regions
  • Testified before the Ohio Legislature on several aviation related pieces of legislation
  • ·Raised thousands of dollars for aviation scholarships through the Ohio Aviation Foundation and annual golf outing
  • Provided a forum at the Ohio Statehouse for members to meet with legislators and their staff to discuss important aviation issues during the Advocacy Day and Legislative Reception

OAA plans to continue growing our initiatives in 2026 by:

  • Launching the OAA airport member geo-mapping project to show the economic impact of each airport as the doorway to each community they serve
  • Connecting our future aviation leaders in K-12, career technical programs, and college and university programs throughout the state with employers in the aviation industry
  • Supporting more domestic and international flights through JobsOhio’s innovative program
  • Promoting new ways Ohio can be a leader in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
  • Advancing “fly-away” exemption legislation that helps Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) grow and support our airports around the state

Advocacy

Having a career in the highly regulated field of aviation you know, first-hand, how state and federal laws and regulations can impact your work each and every day.  At the state level, OAA and its contracted lobbyists work to promote legislative proposals to improve the business climate for airports and the organizations that serve airports. We also work to oppose legislation that will burden the industry or denigrate airports' services and positive impacts on its communities.

The Ohio Aviation Association vigorously advocates important issues year-round. We know you don't always have the time to speak your voice; that is what we are here for!  Your membership in OAA will help because legislators listen to what their constituents have to say.  More members mean a louder advocacy voice!

If you find yourself running up against an issue that is hampering the economic vitality of your airport or aviation organization, let us know! The OAA Advocacy Committee and the OAA Executive Office are always ready to assist you! Send your request to oaa@ohioaviation.org.
